The Who in 250 words (ish)

The Who is an English rock band formed in 1964. The members were singer Roger Daltrey, guitarist and singer Pete Townshend, bass guitarist and singer John Entwistle (1944 – 2002) and drummer Keith Moon (1946 – 1978). Other members were Doug Sandom (1930 – 2019) (original drummer) and Kenny Jones (drummer).  

The band was developed from the Detours and had to change their name due to another group sharing the name. They considered names like ‘No One’ or ‘The Hair’ but settled with The Who. 

The Who released 12 studio albums, 16 live albums, 4 soundtrack albums and 58 singles. The band had 14 singles in the UK top 10 including ‘My Generation’ (1965) which peaked at no.2, ‘Happy Jack’ (1966) which peaked at no.3 and ‘Pinball Wizard’ (1969) which peaked at no.4. 

The band had 1 no.1 album ‘Who’s Next’ (1971) and 15 albums in the top 10. ‘Tommy’ (1969), ‘Quadrophenia’ (1973), ’The Story Of The Who’ (1976) and ‘Face Dances’ (1981) all peaked at no.2. 

‘My Generation’ was the band first studio album released in 1965 and peaked at no.5 in the album charts, the album currently has Gold certification. 

The band were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990 and won the first Freddie Mercury Lifetime Achievement award in 2006. Three of the bands albums have been welcomed into the Grammy Hall of Fame. 

The Who also had 7 albums on the Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list in 2003 and for a long time were the Guinness Book of Records loudest band in the world.
