Phil Collins in 400 words (ish)

Phil Collins was born in London in 1951, his father was an insurance agent and his mother worked at a toy shop and later for a performing arts school. Collins was given a drum kit when he was 5 and as he got older, he started playing alongside music on the television and radio.

As a child, Collins was highly influenced by The Beatles, especially Ringo Starr. When he was a teenager, Collins received piano and music lessons from his father’s aunt and took drumming lessons. When he was 14, he quit school and became a pupil at Barbara Speake. This is where he landed roles like the Artful Dodger at two West End runs of Oliver! And a role in Calamity the Cow.

Phil Collins has released 8 studio albums, 1 live album, 2 soundtrack albums and 50 singles. He has sold more than 150 million records worldwide and his first solo album ‘Face Value’ released in 1981 reached no. 1 in the UK, Canada and Sweden.

In the UK, Collins has had 3 no.1 singles including ‘You Can’t Hurry Love’ in 1982, ‘Easy Lover’ in 1985 and ‘Groovy Kind of Love’ in 1988. He has had a further 10 singles in the top 10 including ‘In The Air Tonight’ released in 1981 and reached no.2 and ‘Two Hearts’ released in 1988 and reached no.6.

Collins had 6 albums reach no.1 in the UK including ‘No Jacket Required’ (1985), ‘…But Seriously’ (1989), ‘Both Sides’ (1993) and ‘Going Back’ (2010). He also had 6 other albums in the top 10 including ‘Hello I Must Be Going’ released in 182 and reached no.2 and ‘Dance into the Light’ released in 1996 and reached no.4.

Phil Collins was also a member of the Band Genesis where he took over as lead singer for the release of ‘A Trick of the Tail’ and ‘Wing & Wuthering’ in 1976 and then stayed until 1996. He later joined again for a tour in 2007 and 2021.

Collins has won 8 Grammy Awards including Album of the Year in 1986 for ‘No Jacket Required’ and Best Soundtrack Album in 2000 for Disney’s Tarzan. He has also won 3 American Music Awards, 6 Brit Awards, 4 Billboard Music Awards, 1 Academy Award and 2 Golden Globes. Reggae is a musical genre that originated from Jamaica and gained popularity in the 1960s. The genre was highly influenced by American jazz, ska, rocksteady and rhythm and blues. Usually, reggae music is off beat, has a slow tempo and is drum and bass heavy. Lyrics often were politicised and stressed the social and economic injustices in the world. The genre is often linked to Rastafarianism and has spread to countries across the world. Reggae spread to the UK in the 70s and influenced bands such as UB40, Steel Pulse and Aswad. Desmond Dekker, Bob Marley and the Wailers and UB40 are three of the most influential and successful reggae artists of all time. See below a little about each artist.
