Vera Lynn in 250 words (ish)

Dame Vera Lynn (1917-2020) was a British singer. She is best known for her performances during World War 2 and often dubbed the Forces Sweetheart. During the war she performed for troops in Egypt, Burma and India.

As many of Lynn's recordings were released prior to the start of UK sales charts (in 1952) Lynn had one UK No.1 hit single ‘My Son My Son’ in 1954. She also had a No.1 album in 2009 ‘We’ll Meet Again-The Very Best Of’. Until recently this made her the oldest living person to have a number one in the UK although she is still the oldest living person to have a No.1 album in the UK.

Lynn was well known for her association with the ENSA (Entertainments National Service Association). Her most popular songs being ‘We’ll Meet Again’, ‘A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square’ and ‘The White Cliffs of Dover’.

The last single she released was ‘I Love This Land’ in 1982 which was released after the end of the Falklands War. In 1952 Lynn became the first British performer to top the charts in the United States with ‘Auf Wiederseh’n Sweetheart’. This was a cover of the song written by Eberhard Storch in 1950.

Lynn received many awards including ‘Spirit of the 20th Century’ in 2000, outstanding contribution award in 2018 at the Classic Brit awards, OBE in 1969 and DBE in 1975.

On 18th June 2020 Lynn passed away surrounded by her close family. She was 103 years old.
