Herb Alpert in 250 words (ish)
Herb Alpert is an American musician (b.1935) well known for his association with the trumpet. He also plays piano and occasionally sings (as demonstrated in his 1969 hit ‘This Guy’s In Love With You). He started playing the trumpet when he was 8.
Herb’s career began as a songwriter, co -writing hits by Jan & Dean and Sam Cooke (including ‘Wonderful World’). As a performer he has released 28 albums and sold around 72 million records worldwide.
He has won 9 Grammy's and had 14 platinum albums. In the UK his biggest single hits were ‘Spanish Flea’, ‘This Guy’s In Love With You’, and he’s had 4 top 10 albums including ‘Best Of The Brass’ and ‘Rise’.
The song ‘Spanish Flea’ has appeared in ‘The Dating Game’, ‘The Simpsons’, ‘The Otto Show’, ‘American Pie 2’ and ‘Supernatural’. ‘A Taste Of Honey’ (originally by Bobby Scott and Richard Marlow) won Record of the Year in 1966 and spent 5 weeks at number 1 on the Easy Listening Charts. The song was released on the 1965 album ‘Whipped Cream & Other Delights’, considered one of Herb’s most popular albums.
In 1962, Herb founded A&M Records with record promoter Jerry Moss. The label went on to sign artists like The Police, The Carpenters, Supertramp and Janet Jackson as well as Herb’s own recordings. The label was eventually sold to Polydor.
In 1990 Herb created the Herb Alpert Foundation, an organisation that gives grants to groups and provides support. Herb and his wife Lani Hall highly support the arts and arts education which
prompted him to create the foundation in aim to give back to the community.
